The 2.8L Cressida

At the beginning of 2004, we decided the GT-Four was costing us too much to run as a daily driver, as I was travelling about 70km a day to and from work, so we started looking for a 1.8L-2L Corona or similar as a daily driver. Somehow we ended up buying the Cressida. It had over 260,000km on it, but it was 80's luxury at it's finest!

It had cruise control, leather seats, auto w/ overdrive, digital dash, climate control aircon, and it was very comfortable to drive. Unfortunately the 5MGE engine was pretty bloody thirsty, and fuel consumption was no better than the Celica! On the open road, however, the fuel economy was suprisingly good. Not only that, but this was the first long wheelbase RWD car we had owned, and it was hillarious in the wet. Having recently owned the AW11 NA, getting into this was like driving a boat! I had this at what felt like 90 degree angles to the road in the wet, and rather than losing it and spinning it would just sit there quite happily for about 5 or 10 minutes when the back finally decided to come back into line.

As far as modifications go:

And that was it. It's actually suprising that at no point did I think seriously about an engine conversion for this, despite having a 7MGTE at our disposal during the ownership of this car. Ultimately we'd like to get another Cressida, possibly an MX83 (or a variation), and repower it with perhaps a 1UZ-FE V8 and use it as a tow car/general cruiser, as this one was really quite nice to get around in.
